Mark Grist: Online Drum Lessons

online drum Lessons - Mark Grist

Requirements and Helpful Tips For OnLine Drum Lessons
1. A steady broadband connection, if necessary check speeds with your provider, set up either Zoom meetings account{preferred} or Skype account. When using Zoom app it needs to be set up properly for music lessons audio.

Here are the instructions:In your account, go to home page, In top right hand corner click on small * settings icon, then click on audio settings, un-click the “Adjust microphone volume” box, below this click on advanced tab, tick the The “Enable Original Sound” box to “ON” position then in the Audio Processing section.
“Disable” the first two boxes and leave the third box in ”Auto” mode.

i’ve added a short Youtube tutorial link for this below:

This process is essential and allows for a much cleaner listening/monitoring experience, especially with musical instruments.

2. My class broadcasts will be full detailed stereo from my studio, you need to have good camera and audio reception back to me, most built in pc cameras will work, you can monitor me from either your computer speakers or headphones output whilst keeping your speakers active so I can monitor your response from your built in computer microphone picking up your room sound.
Standard Pc and Mac computers will be fine, if working from pads or phones you will need to consider & configure the ins and outs of your device for our two way conversations, this is the most basic approach, some may have more advanced connectivity,we can discuss and set up as necessary.

3. Students with electronic drum kits: As I will most likely be monitoring you from your computer speakers, those with Ekits will have to go through some type of speaker allowing me to hear your playing/sounds in your room being picked up by your computer microphone. Be aware, the frequency range from your Ekit can damage inappropriate small speakers, I would not recommend small PC or HI-FI speakers, I have put a link here should you wish to look at some purchasing options –

Students with acoustic drum kits: Similar model to above, hearing the kit through your pc microphone will work on my end ,as you probably use headphones connected to your PC, pads, phones etc for regular playing along, I will still need to hear your performance for appraisal through some speaker source.

I can conduct the classes without this audio, but with electric kits I would be limited to hearing the sounds of sticks on rubber pads which is not ideal but is workable with drum exercises. Again working with syllabus music backing tracks and my monitoring and appraisal of performances, the above audio considerations very much apply here, what I receive from the student doesn’t have to be perfect but certainly audible.

4. I will be screen sharing and emailing exercise sheets on the go and recording audio Mp3 of class for emailing to you later that day. A lot of information here with set up, my goal is to make our classes productive and fun.

As well as offering online drums lessons I also offer a more traditional style of teaching, one on one lessons with students in my drum studio at Mark Grist Drum Lessons

My studio is equipped with two Roland V-Drums kits, Yamaha and Pearl acoustic kits, and Meinl cymbals. All lessons are recorded (audio) as a normal part of the take-home practice material so all students can review in their own time. This proves to be an excellent consolidation benefit.

I offer a structured course in drum tuition catering for all grades from total beginners right up to advanced students; all lessons are conducted on a one-to-one basis.

Along with the traditional structure, I can tailor classes to suit students who want to focus on very specific techniques and styles, their favourite players, concert and tuition media etc. Exams are optional and I teach the Rockschool Graded Drum Examination Syllabus. I have a consistent student exam success rate at merit and distinction level.

If you feel this style of learning would suit you better please get in touch via email at or a phone call at (087) 8048800.

Cheers, Mark.

“I have been a Drumming Student of Mark Grist for about three years now. During this time Mark has taught me various different styles of Drumming
such as Rock,Metal, Funk, Pop, etc. I have learned how to read Drum Music which I have found to be a great advantage when it come to learning my favorite bands drum parts or learning from books. Mark also taught me good hand and foot technique, drum rudiments, para-diddles and their application on the drum-set, double bass drum technique and playing in different time signature’s”.

I would highly recommend Mark as a Drum Teacher for beginners and advanced players.

A native of Dunshaughlin Co. Meath, Ian began playing drums and bodhran at 14 years of age. By 21 Ian studied for a year with renowned Dublin drummer Mark Grist going from the basics of the 26 American Rudiments right through to the interdependence of jazz and Afro Cuban patterns. Ian recorded and toured with Irish band ‘The West 70’s’ and has shared the stage with artists as diverse as Ronan Keating, Brendan Grace, Carlos Nunez, Donal Lunny, Mairtin O’ Connor and Michael Mc Goldrick. In 2007 Ian played bodhran in an ensemble of commissioned music for the Ryder Cup opening and closing ceremonies. Ian is currently drummer/percussionist and Bodhran player with River dance and has toured North and Central America with the show. When not touring he works as a freelance musician while also working on his debut album.

I was looking for drum lessons that would cover not only the technique but also all the styles of music that makes drumming great.
Marks obvious mastery of the instrument combined with a wisdom that can only be gained by years on the professional circuit offer that and much more.
I always think that people who are passionate about what they do make the best teachers and Mark in certainly that.
Informal yet informative and at a reasonable price. I’d recommend the drum shed to anyone.

I started lessons with Mark around three years ago, having first met him because I needed my snare tuned for a gig. I had heard from a friend that he was the man for the job. Needless to say, after our first encounter, I realized that I had a lot left to learn! I have been playing drums for over ten years, and have had lessons before, but always felt that teachers tended to dictate what I would learn. Mark is always ready to listen and encourage. He has helped me to develop my own musical interests as well as giving expert tuition and advice on all styles of drumming. Mark is an extremely talented musician and a great teacher, and I would be the first to recommend him to any drumming enthusiast looking to learn more, whether beginner or professional!
